Starting a Mobile Locksmith Business

Starting a Mobile Locksmith Business

I have since discovered that many people follow a similar course, turning to locksmiths only after finding themselves unhappy in other jobs. Im not sure how or why so many people discover this company when looking for an interesting career.

Begin with credibility. Buy a small work closet, or a large, if you can afford it. Buy signs or have characters painted on it. Use which lending you have, be it with banks or with family, to find a used vehicle and have signs, even if this is in the form of magnetic signs. Of course, all of this suggests you start as a legitimate company, and this is just my point. Create a name for your business think long and hard about this, since you lose any credibility that you can get first if you continue to change it, characters and forms and letterheads have been created and appear.

Once you have lined up a cheap vehicle and put a reasonable professional sign of it, you have to start dressing it. This should and must happen before you start advertising your services, because if you are like me at this time you know almost nothing about the business and not much more about the work.

The vehicle you purchase will largely determine how it will be equipped. I have always preferred a full-size car I have owned Ford, Chevy and GMC models during my career, but there are many locksmiths who just love Astro Van or Safari Van made by GM. These minivans are popular in many different professions and are everywhere present.

You need a power source. Its excused for extension strings until you can afford something better, but keep in mind that this will jeopardize your professionalism. The ultimate one probably has a RediLine Generator that runs out of your van 12V power. This is not a power converter, its actually a generator and it kicks out 110-115V power.

Power now available, you must start with at least one key duplicator on your bench and preferably also a good code cutting machine. The latter is desirable but not necessary at the beginning if you do not plan to start directly in biliary digestion, in which case it is difficult to agree without one. We will touch it in a moment. Important machines are almost impossible to find. You are likely to stop buying a small HPC Speedex because they are pretty much the cheapest handsome duplicator around. Expect to pay around $ 500. Best if you include this in your original loan. A key duplicator is bread and butter for all locksmiths, mobile or otherwise, so do not even think about starting until you have one.

Equip yourself with a good rekeying kit. Ive always preferred universal kits because they do work with dozens of other keyway-specific kits and they are easy to use. LAB makes the best of these, hands down. If you have space, try to get a metal classic kit.

Even before I made money on key locks, I was urged to open cars. If you intend to advertise yourself as a rescue service, you must take this kind of profitable work. Let me tell you now, these are the easiest money youve ever made. It is well worth learning the skills required to open vehicles, even if it involves spending a couple of hundred dollars on tools and a good manual. Lockouts, at least in my case, supported me virtually for several years.

House and company locks are likewise lucrative income sources for locksmiths, but these require different skills, different tools. Here it is necessary to learn the skill of locklocking - probably the most basic skills in trade. Its not as easy to learn as car opening and locking, but its not hard at all. It requires practice and patience, and it requires good tools. Do not get stupid here.

There are other aspects of providing a locksmith service and among these is the ability to install locking rates at home and business. First of all, you will be asked to install deadbolts, but later, when your business grows larger, you want to offer commercial companies and real estate companies the opportunity to replace all their old lock hardware for newer safer hardware. Again, practice is required and you should be prepared to install some unnecessary deadbolts and knock on doors in your own home that do not need them.

When you have accumulated vehicles and tools, and some knowledge gained from exercise and reading, you can start thinking about getting your feet wet. The best way to start is the old-fashioned way and its appealing to family and friends for work and referrals. Network. Talk to everyone you know and let them know that you are serious about this and that you are available. Step two is to advertise and it is imperative, even if you only start as a list in the yellow pages.
